Fire Protection

What is Fire Protection?

Thermal or fire protection is a material or coating that is applied over polyurethane foam. It is designed to slow the temperature increase of the foam during a fire and to delay the foam’s involvement in that fire.

Air Barrier Insulation offers 2 thermal barrier/fire protection solutions.

Monokote

A spray applied thermal barrier/fire protection product is designed to help you meet building code and insurance requirements. Monokote Z-3306 is a cementitous fire protection coating specifically formulated and approved for application over rigid polyurethane and polystyrene foam plastics. Spray applied to interior foam surfaces on walls and ceilings, Z-3306 forms a hard, durable, cement like monolithic thermal barrier against heat and fire.

HiBar

Is a ULC listed, spray applied semi cementitious mineral fibre thermal barrier/fire protection. HiBar has insulation as well as acoustical properties. It’s egg carton like finish and low moisture content is ideally suited for installation in dry crawl spaces and small basements.

As per the Ontario Building Code 9.10.17.10 all foam plastic insulation must be covered with an approved thermal barrier in order to obtain occupancy permits (NEW CONSTRUCTION).
